Hair Transitioning: What You Need to Know
I went through this process too, let me share what I learnt, Mholweni!
The journey of transitioning from relaxed to natural hair is a decision that resonates deeply with many in our community. Join me as we talk about the essentials of hair transitioning, sharing tips that can guide you through this empowering process – let’s dive in.
The Essence of Hair Transitioning: A Personal Journey
So, what’s this hair transitioning buzz all about? It’s like giving your hair a fresh start. It’s not just about hair – it’s a journey of self-discovery and embracing your unique texture.
Hair transitioning is a journey of growth, both in your hair’s length and your self-acceptance. This process involves gradually allowing your natural hair to grow while gently trimming away the relaxed ends. It’s a chance to rekindle your connection with your hair’s authentic texture.
Embracing My Unique Path
Generally, I have always had long natural hair, it is all I have known all my life so “the big chop” was not an option for me because I needed time to adjust to the idea of having shorter hair – also, I have a big head haha!
Guiding Lights: Navigating Hair Transitioning
- Cultivating Patience:
Transitioning demands time and patience. The duration of this journey varies based on factors like your desired hair length and the pace of your hair’s growth. Be gentle with yourself, celebrate every milestone, and appreciate the progress you make.
- Get Creative with Protective Styles
Embrace protective hairstyles like braids, twists, buns, or weaves to shield your hair from excessive manipulation and to minimize damage. These styles help retain length and promote healthy growth – please take breaks in between to give your hair some time to breathe. I mainly played around with natural hairstyles throughout my transition period as I had not figured out protective styling yet. I always had “amaflerho” growing up (plaited hair) and so this was the only protective style I was familiar with at the time.
- Quenching the Thirst: Moisturize
Keep your transitioning hair well moisturized to combat dryness and prevent breakage. Deep conditioning treatments, leave-in conditioners, and regular moisturizing routines are essential. Your hair is at its most fragile state right now, if it is dry, it will break at a faster rate than it grows.
- Snip Snip: Regular Trims
Gradually trim away the relaxed ends to remove the damaged hair and promote healthier growth. This step is crucial in achieving a uniform hair texture throughout your journey.
- Finding Community and Support
You’re not alone on this journey. Connect with others who are transitioning or have already embraced their natural locks. Sharing stories and tips can be a game-changer. It’s like having a squad cheering you on!
- Dancing with Versatility
Throughout your transition, your hair will have two distinct textures. The natural kinky texture closer to your scalp and relaxed hair. Embrace this duality and get creative. Play with styles that gracefully blend both textures, celebrating the beauty of your hair’s evolution.
